Even if you’re not an avid gambler, there is a high chance that you’ve seen a roulette game at some point in your life and are vaguely familiar with how it works. Essentially, you would place bets on a number, or series of numbers. The roulette wheel is then spun and if the ball lands on a number or group of numbers that you’ve bet on, you will win a certain amount depending on the amount of money wagered and the type of bet made. For those of you who’ve already played roulette in a brick-and-mortar casino, you will find that the rules of the game are essentially the same when you play online.
But for those of you who don’t know too much about the game itself, here is a basic overview of how it works. Just like in land-based casinos, there are two main types of roulette games: American and European (or French). The difference between them is that the American wheels has 38 spots, being the numbers 0 and 00 (double zero), plus the regular 1-36 numbers. The European version has 37 spots, as it only has one 0. The house edge on European roulette is lower due to the fact that there is one less number, therefore, your chances of winning are slightly higher.

Playing Rouletter for the First Time
If you’re playing roulette for the first time, it is recommended that you first practice with play money to get a feel for how the game works before you wager real funds.
To play the game and place your bets in an online game, you would first select the denomination of the chip you want to use ($1, $2, $5, $10, etc.) and then click on a spot in the roulette field. There are various kinds of bets that you can place in an online roulette game. Here is an overview of them and their respective payoffs:
Red or Black, 1-18 or 19-36, Even or Odd. The payoff is (1 to 1) on these bets. So if you bet $10 on Black and a Black number comes up, you win $10.
1st, 2nd or 3rd 12 or 1st, 2nd or 3rd column. The payoff for these bets is 2 to 1.
One number. The simplest type of bet. If your number comes up, the payoff is 35 to 1.
- Set of 2 numbers. Payoff 17 to 1.
- Set of 3 numbers. Payoff is 11 to 1.
- Set of 4 number. Payoff is 8 to 1.
- Set of 5 numbers. The payoff is 6 to 1.
- Set of 6 numbers. The payoff is 5 to 1.
You aren’t limited to just one bet or even one type of bet. For example, you can bet on the numbers 36 and 0 at the same time. If one of them comes up, you will win 35 to 1 on the number that did come up and lose the bet for the other number.
If you play online, you will find that many casinos offer various promotions and sign-up bonuses to new or existing players. However, you should be carefully read the terms and conditions associated with any bonus offer if you’re a roulette player. This is because many casinos impose severe restrictions on which games their bonuses can get used for.
In many cases, any bets placed on table games such as roulette do not count towards the wagering requirements. Some may forbid you from using bonus money to play roulette altogether and will simply confiscate your winnings if you do. But the good news is that many casinos recognize that some players prefer table games instead of slots and will give bonuses that can be used to play their online roulette games.
